Roshani Community Care Centre


Shantidoot is running the Centre, since June 2009.




To provide care and support services to HIV/AIDS affected persons, their families and; prevention & management of HIV/AIDS in the community.


  • The Centre supports PLHAs (People living with HIV/AIDS) by enabling them to access ART as well as by providing monitoring, follow-up, counseling services to those who are initiated on ART, positive prevention, drug adherence, nutrition counseling, etc. as well as monitoring of PLHA who do not require ART yet (Pre-ART care).
  • All PLHAs on ART (within the assigned target area) receives minimum of five days’ in-patient care/treatment for OIs (Opportunistic Infections), monitoring for side effects and tolerance to ART regimen and/or stabilization of OIs.


  • Follow-up home-visits to ensure home care, monitoring of their well-being and treatment adherence, psychosocial and counselling support on drug/treatment adherence, patient education, nutrition counselling, positive prevention including consistent use of condoms, reproductive health counselling for HIV-positive women and couples, family counseling for acceptance of test status of PLHA, counselling for supervised administration of drugs, home based care, condom for safer sex, etc. are part of centre's activities.
  • PLHAs that do not require ART are followed up for pre- ART care such as routine regular monitoring of CD4 testing and other medical concerns.


  • Out-patient facilities are provided for consultation of illnesses related to HIV/AIDS treatment of OIs, counselling for adherence and home-based care (HBC), condom for safer sex, referral services to ICTC for confirmation of HIV status in patients with unconfirmed or unknown status, spouses and family members of PLHAs, PPTCT for care of HIV-positive pregnant women, Paediatric HIV services/ART centre for children living with HIV/AIDS.

Beneficiaries: PLHAs (People living with HIV/AIDS), their family and community members.


Area served: Madhubani District and two blocks of adjoining Darbhanga District (Bihar).


The Team: Activities of the 10-bedded Centre are managed by one administrator-cum-coordinator, one doctor, one counsellor, two nurses, two janitors, three outreach workers (ORWs), one accountant and one cook.


Supporting Agency: Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), under GFATM (Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria) Pact Project.


Centre Location: Near REO Office, Kotwali Chowk, Madhubani 



Special School for SC Girl Children


Shantidoot is running the school since 1997.



  • Non-formal, basic education to SC girl children (6 – 14 yrs).
  • Mainstreaming child labours into regular education system.


  • Awareness generation in the community, especially among SCs regarding literacy/education of girl children.



  • Awareness generation and mobilization of SC community, especially for education of girl children.
  • Non-formal basic education, exclusively to SC girl children (between 6 to 14 years).


  • Provision of motivational incentives - free study materials and free mid-day meal.
  • Organization of school-based and community-based motivation activities.


  • Linkage with nearby govt./non-govt. schools for mainstreaming of students of the school.
  • Advocacy with local administration and district education department.


Beneficiaries: SC girl children and the community.


Area served: Mamurabad Panchayat in Nalanda District (Bihar).


The Team: Headmaster, four Teachers, one Assistant and one Cook/Helper.

Support for Education/Literacy Programmes


Improvement of literacy status and education is one of the most important focus areas of Shantidoot since inception.
Apart from running schools for basic/primary education to disadvantaged sections of society, the organization conducts and actively participates in programmes/activities for promoting literacy status.


  • Support in ‘Sakshar Bharat’ programme – National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA) under Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. on 8th September 2009 launched an ambitious programme to impart literacy to over six lakh adult females in low female literacy districts of the country.


The organization actively participates in Sakshar Bharat programmes/activities – selection of trainers, training of trainers, formation of monitoring committees at various levels, support in selection of committee members, awareness & publicity of the programme in rural areas, etc.


  • Literacy Centre for Physically Challenged children – The organization runs bridge education course, especially for physically challenged children, to provide equal opportunity for education.


Centres are run for three months in rural areas where discrimination against such children is more prevalent. Children are identified during survey for distribution of aids & equipments to disabled persons. Trainers especially trained for teaching disabled children are engaged on assignment basis. Children are also provided with free study materials. After completion of basic education/literacy course the organization helps them in getting enrolled in regular schools of their choice. 


  • Evaluation of literacy projects – The organization also conducts evaluation of literacy projects/activities. Such evaluation exercises are conducted mainly on request of other (grassroots level) organizations implementing projects.

Such evaluations are normally conducted for non-formal education/literacy centres, literacy camps, adult education centres, etc. The organization has at its disposal experienced personals and professionals to conduct the evaluation.


  • Research Studies on Literacy/Education – The organization also conducts different kinds of studies to help in developing concepts, planning, implementing or modifying education/literacy promoting projects.


The organization conducts studies on its own or on request of other organization. Professionals supported by field level functionaries experienced in education/literacy projects or activities conduct such studies. The organization has conducted studies on school dropout cases in Muslim weavers’ families, impact study of non-formal education centres, study on literacy awareness programme in SC community, etc.  


  • Literacy-linked Vocational Courses – Shantidoot is the Parent Body of Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) Nalanda. It is a scheme of Min. of HRD, GOI for 15 – 35 year old non-literate/neo-literates.
Vocational courses organized by the Sansthan are literacy-linked in which apart from skill development training literacy classes are organized for trainees. Teaching material for such courses are developed by the Sansthan and also purchased from SRCs. Help from ‘Primers’ developed by SRCs are also taken to impart literacy classes to JSS trainees.
